Join us in honouring Don Moriarty as the 2022 Legacy Award Recipient!
In 1885 his Grandfather John Moriarty came to Saskatchewan from Nova Scotia to farm. He settled in an area of east central Saskatchewan, now called Kamsack. The original town was in his farm yard where he operated a general store and post office.
He and a couple of neighbors were discussing a name for the new town when my grandfather?s friend Chief Kamsaki from the local Saulteu tribe joined the discussion and the three agreed to call the town Kamsack. Our family farmed there for three generations until 2019.
I graduated from Kamsack Collegiate at the age of seventeen on June 30 1963 and on July 2 went to work as a student apprentice at Wilson Funeral Home in Kamsack. I received my license as a Funeral Director and Embalmer in 1967.
In 1968 my wife and I left Kamsack for Regina, where I eventually met my future business partners.
On April 1 1976 we purchased MacKenzie Funeral Home in Prince Albert. I would be owner and Manager for the next twenty- five years.
Together with my wife Linda, and our daughters, Tracy, Jillian and Corry, we moved to Prince Albert. We jumped right into the community joining the Messiah Lutheran Church congregation, the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club of Prince Albert, where I was Club Recording Secretary and later served two terms as President and the Board of Directors for many years. Our family?s involvement in the Prince Albert business community has now gone into a second generation as our daughter Tracy now owns and operates her business, Feher Financial.
Many years later I sold MacKenzie Funeral Home and in 2003 I joined the team at River Park Funeral Home to work with my friend and colleague Phil Fredette. In 2011 I became Manager at River Park and continued as a Funeral Director and Manager until about a year ago when I felt working for fifty-eight years was long enough. When folks ask me what will you do now, I reply ?whatever I want?.
We have really enjoyed our years in Prince Albert, its hometown hospitality and the wonderful people I have been privileged to work with.
