Labour Law Workshop: Workplace Investigations & Social Media and Privacy
Session 1: Leah Schatz, MLT Lawyer Workplace Investigations Time: 9:00-12:00 Session Description: The Workplace Investigations Presentation will provide an effective overview of the necessary components in a workplace investigation and how to conduct investigations effectively. The session will be a lecture style with opportunities for questions. Participants will learn the tips and traps of conducting workplace investigations and how to be effective in conducting them.
Participants will:
- Understand the basics of workplace investigations
- Apply the legal threshold in determining if an investigation meets legal requirements.
- Analyze workplace investigations.
- Learning Objectives:
- Learn current case law and workplace investigations;
- Examine effective components of workplace investigations; and
- Examine statutory framework surrounding the necessary workplace investigation.
Session 2: Shannon Whyley, MLT Lawyer Social Media and Privacy Time: 1:00-4:00
Session Description: This session will explore when employees' personal use of social media impacts the workplace and what employers can do about it. Learning Objectives:
- What is the legal framework for privacy of employee personal information in Saskatchewan
- How to deal with misuse of social media that amounts to personal harassment or other disciplinable conduct
- What are the legal issues arising from "bring your own device" policies
